Tata Malala is the grandmother of the Rabe family, Fara's mother. At 68 this former schoolteacher is clever, clear-sighted and funny, and she is impossible to miss: a half-plucked Malagasy chicken nests on her head, and has done so for good.

## The chicken on her head

Tata Malala once saved a chicken from the butcher. The chicken built its nest on her head and has never left since. She protects it fiercely and lets nobody come near it, and every now and then she takes an egg out of her hair and eats it.

A former schoolteacher, Tata Malala is sharp, lucid and funny. She keeps her feet on the ground and thinks in budgets and in what can actually be done. She also has her mystical moments, when she consults her little mirror. She tells stories of her past, and she reads.
