Jean-Michel is a 34-year-old French investor in Antananarivo, a friend of the Rabe family, known as the *vazaha reraka*, the worn-out foreigner (*vazaha* is the Malagasy word for a foreigner). Naive, clumsy and sincere, he goes from one investment to the next without any of them quite working out, and he never cheats.

## A foreigner seen from the inside

Ny Rabe is made by Malagasy people, for Malagasy people, and Jean-Michel is the foreigner as they see him: endearing, a little ridiculous, and always sincere. He loves Malagasy outfits, wears the Betsileo hat and the vangovango, and speaks Malagasy with plenty of goodwill and a few approximations.
